Municipal Waste Management – How to Become More Circular?
This EDUC blended course introduces municipal waste management from a circular economy perspective, combining lectures, international teamwork, and real case-study analysis.
Students will explore waste prevention, collection systems, recycling, organic waste treatment, communication, behaviour, and policy tools. The aim is to understand how urban waste systems work and how they can become more circular through prevention, reuse, recycling, recovery, and better management strategies.
The course takes place online in July 2026, followed by an in-person activity in Brno from 31 August to 4 September 2026. Lectures are delivered by staff from the University of Cagliari and Masaryk University.
A key activity is the group case study. International teams will analyse the waste management system of either Cagliari or Brno, prepare a system overview and SWOT analysis, identify one priority issue, and propose practical improvements. The final output will be a 10-minute group presentation.
By the end of the course, students will be able to interpret municipal waste data, evaluate local waste systems, and propose evidence-based recommendations to improve circularity at city level.
